Estimating the Occurrence of False Positives and False Negatives in Microarray Studies by Approximating and Partitioning the Empirical Distribution of P-values

چکیده
MOTIVATION The occurrence of false positives and false negatives in a microarray analysis could be easily estimated if the distribution of p-values were approximated and then expressed as a mixture of null and alternative densities. Essentially any distribution of p-values can be expressed as such a mixture by extracting a uniform density from it. The False Discovery Rate in Simultaneous Fisher and Adjusted Permutation Hypothesis Testing on Microarray Data
Background and Objectives: In recent years, new technologies have led to produce a large amount of data and in the field of biology, microarray technology has also dramatically developed. Meanwhile, the Fisher test is used to compare the control group with two or more experimental groups and also to detect the differentially expressed genes. In this study, the false discovery rate was investiga...
متن کاملEstimating false positives and negatives in brain networks
The human brain is a complex network of anatomically segregated regions interconnected by white matter pathways, known as the human connectome. Diffusion tensor imaging can be used to reconstruct this structural brain network in vivo and noninvasively. However, due to a wide variety of influences, both false positive and false negative connections may occur. By choosing a 'group threshold', bra...
متن کاملA Novel Intelligent Water Drops Optimization Approach for Estimating Global Solar Radiation
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Measurement of solar radiance demands expensive devices to be used. Alternatively, estimator models are used instead. In this paper, a new method based on the empirical equations is introduced to estimate the monthly average daily global solar radiation on a horizontal surface. The proposed method uses Intelligent Water ...
متن کاملA closer look at self-reported suicide attempts: false positives and false negatives.
The validity of self-reported suicide attempt information is undermined by false positives (e.g., incidences without intent to die), or by unreported suicide attempts, referred to as false negatives. In a sample of 1,385 Austrian adults, we explored the occurrence of false positives and false negatives with detailed, probing questions. Removing false positives decreased the rate of suicide atte...
متن کاملContrasting groups’ standard setting for consequences analysis in validity studies: reporting considerations
Background The contrasting groups' standard setting method is commonly used for consequences analysis in validity studies for performance in medicine and surgery. The method identifies a pass/fail cut-off score, from which it is possible to determine false positives and false negatives based on observed numbers in each group. Since groups in validity studies are often small, e.g., due to a limi...
